Event Overview

Hosted by the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA), the 2024 Green Transition Strategy Workshop gathered steel producers, energy firms, and policymakers to outline ESG-aligned pathways for Vietnam’s steel sector. As the representative body for Vietnam’s $30B steel industry, VSA focused on merging decarbonization, social responsibility, and governance—positioning the sector to meet 2050 global net-zero targets. The workshop highlighted how ESG principles are redefining competitiveness in Vietnam’s steel industry.

Environmental Impact: Decarbonization & Low-Carbon Tech

Environmental sessions centered on “green steel production”: experts shared strategies to adopt low-carbon technologies (e.g., hydrogen-based direct reduction, energy-efficient blast furnaces) and integrate renewable energy (e.g., solar power for steel mills). Discussions also addressed circularity—recycling scrap steel to reduce reliance on virgin iron ore, aligning with Vietnam’s National Green Growth Strategy (2021–2030).

Social Responsibility: Worker Upskilling & Community Impact

Social impact discussions focused on supporting the transition’s human dimension: sessions covered VSA’s worker training programs (e.g., upskilling staff to operate low-carbon equipment) and community engagement (e.g., reducing air pollution near steel mills to improve public health). The workshop also emphasized fair labor practices—ensuring steel firms provide safe working conditions and equitable wages as they adopt new technologies.

Governance: Regulatory Alignment & Transparent Reporting

Governance sessions focused on aligning steel producers with Vietnam’s carbon pricing mechanisms and international ESG frameworks (e.g., ISO 14001, GRI). Speakers stressed the need for firms to disclose carbon emissions, energy use, and sustainability targets to regulators and investors. VSA’s role in developing industry-wide decarbonization roadmaps ensures members adopt consistent, accountable practices—building trust with stakeholders.

Looking Ahead: Green Steel as Vietnam’s ESG Growth Engine

The 2024 workshop demonstrated that steel production is no longer just an industrial activity—it is a key driver of Vietnam’s ESG transition. By integrating decarbonization, social equity, and robust governance, VSA is guiding the sector toward a sustainable, competitive future. The event reinforced that green steel requires long-term collaboration between industry, government, and global partners.
