Cambodia Brings Francophonie Summit Back to Asia, Pairing Diplomacy with Technology and Trade

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Phnom Penh will host the 20th Summit of the Francophonie from 15 to 16 November 2026, preceded by the 48th Ministerial Conference on 14 November, making Cambodia the first Southeast Asian nation to hold the Francophonie’s top-level gathering and only the second Asian host after Hanoi in 1997.

Heads of state from the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, which spans 90 states and governments across Europe, Africa, the Americas and Asia Pacific, will convene under the theme “Reinvesting in Peace for Shared Prosperity and Sustainable Stability.” Cambodia has been a full OIF member since 1993, with ties to the organisation predating that membership: the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk was one of four founding figures behind the Francophonie’s precursor body, alongside leaders from Senegal, Tunisia and Niger.

The summit programme extends beyond diplomacy. A Village de la Francophonie will run from 13 to 17 November, showcasing tourism, culture and trade from Francophone member states alongside Cambodia’s own offerings. Parallel initiatives include FrancoTech, positioned to build economic and institutional networks across the Francophone technology ecosystem. Member states will also elect the OIF Secretary-General for the 2027 to 2030 term on 16 November, with four candidates having gone through the organisation’s newly formalised selection process including ministerial hearings, ahead of the vote.
