FRANKFURT — Attendee experience and event design emerged as recurring themes across the education program and exhibition floor at IMEX Frankfurt 2026, with organisers, designers, and event professionals exploring how physical environments can influence engagement, participation, and learning outcomes.
Sessions throughout the week examined topics ranging from audience attention and networking behaviour to venue layouts, sensory design, and interactive event formats. Speakers discussed how organisers are increasingly looking beyond traditional conference structures as they seek to create more engaging and memorable in-person experiences.
The emphasis on design was also evident throughout the exhibition. IMEX Frankfurt adopted “Design Matters” as its overarching theme, while redesigned education spaces, interactive installations, and experiential activations were integrated throughout the event. Organisers said the theme was intended to encourage discussion around the role of design in shaping meetings, events, workplaces, and communities.
Several sessions focused on how event environments can support participation and connection. Discussions explored issues such as attendee fatigue, information overload, accessibility, and the growing expectation for events to provide experiences that cannot easily be replicated online.
Rather than treating design solely as an aesthetic consideration, many speakers described it as a practical tool that influences how people interact, collaborate, and engage with content. Across the show floor, conversations frequently returned to the challenge of creating environments that encourage meaningful participation while delivering value for attendees.
The prominence of experience design at IMEX Frankfurt reflected broader discussions taking place across the business events sector, where organisers continue to examine how event formats, spaces, and attendee journeys can contribute to stronger engagement and more effective knowledge sharing.
